Choosing a DUI Program in San Diego County
If you are convicted of a DUI in San Diego County, the court may require that you attend DUI classes as a condition of your probation and to re-establish your driving privileges. You can fulfill this requirement by enrolling in one of the state-licensed DUI programs.
You have 21 days from the day of your sentencing to enroll in a state-sponsored DUI program. These programs will only allow students to enroll if they have a court order mandating their attendance. Currently, four providers are certified to offer DUI education in San Diego County. The programs mentioned in the Official San Diego County DUI School list below are ADA compliant and accessible to all eligible students. These San Diego County DUI schools offer various class types and schedules. The cost also varies between the four providers. Most DUI schools offer payment plans. You can pay a down payment when you start the program, and then make monthly payments until the charges are paid. If you cannot pay for the classes, you may qualify for a fee waiver. The cost and duration of DUI San Diego classes vary depending on the type of conviction.
Wet Reckless Requirement
If you have been convicted of reckless driving with a measurable blood alcohol level of .08 or less, you may be able to plead to a Wet Reckless offense. Wet Reckless is not as severe as a DUI charge, however, you must complete 12 hours of DUI classes to fulfill the mandated requirement. If you are convicted of a second wet reckless offense, the subsequent conviction is considered a DUI. You will be required to attend a longer, more extensive DUI program.
First Offense DUI Class
Individuals who are convicted of driving under the influence for the first time are required to take a state-licensed First Offense DUI class. The duration of the First Offense DUI class is 30 hours, extended over a three month period. The cost of this class is approximately $600.
AB541 DUI School in San Diego County
If you are convicted of a first-time offense, but your blood-alcohol level was measured between .15 and .19, the court will mandate a longer, more extensive program. You will be required to take 60 hours of DUI education over a six month period. The cost for the six month AB541 DUI school runs between $800 and $900. If your BAC measures .20 or higher for your first offense, you will be mandated to attend AB541 First Offense DUI classes. AB541 First Offense DUI classes are given over a nine-month period, and the approximate costs is around $1,200.
The San Diego County DUI Multi Offender DUI Program
For second and subsequent DUI convictions within a 10-year period, you will be required to attend the CA SB38 Multi Offender 18 month class. The CA SB38 Multi Offender 18 month class consists of 52 hours of group counseling, 12 hours of drug and alcohol education, six hours of monitoring and biweekly interviews with a program counselor for the first year of the program. The cost of this program ranges between $1,800 and $1,900.
San Diego County may choose to mandate a 30-month program for individuals with three or more DUI convictions. Third Offense DUI classes require 78 hours of group counseling, 12 hours of classroom education, 120 to 300 hours of community service and individual interview sessions. Though the judge may grant your request for Third Offense DUI classes, she may not allow you to obtain a restricted license. The chances that you can receive a restricted license decrease with each conviction.
