SR-22 insurance is required in Arizona for high-risk drivers convicted of serious traffic offenses, such as DUIs. Breathe Easy Insurance is here to assist you and ensure financial responsibility on the road.

      Filing Your Arizona SR‑22 Insurance

Under certain circumstances, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will require that a driver maintain proof of future financial responsibility known as an SR-22 certificate of insurance. An SR-22 is not a type of insurance but rather a form filed with the ADOT. It indicates that you will maintain the minimum levels of liability coverage mandated under state law for three (3) years.

Minimum Levels of Liability Coverage in Arizona

The minimum levels of liability coverage in Arizona are:

      • $25,000 bodily-injury liability for one person
      • $50,000 bodily-injury for two or more people
      • $15,000 property-damage liability

An SR-22 certificate of insurance is generally required after a license suspension due to an alcohol or drug offense such as Driving Under the Influence. The ADOT may also require an SR-22 if you violate Arizona's vehicle insurance laws. For example, if you fail to provide insurance after a request by law enforcement or if you are involved in an accident and do not have insurance you may have to maintain proof of future financial responsibility (SR-22) for three (3) years.

      Arizona SR-22 Requirements

If you are required to file proof of future financial responsibility, you have two options:

      1. Obtain an SR-22 through a licensed insurance agent and maintain the certificate for three (3) years.
      2. Obtain a certificate from the Arizona Office of Treasurer showing deposit in cash or certificates of deposit of $40,000.

Failure to maintain the SR-22 certificate of insurance on file for the mandatory three (3) years will result in the suspension of your license and registration.

Arizona Driving Under the Influence (DUI)

Arizona is known as one of the states with the strictest drunk driving laws. On a first offense Arizona DUI you could face up to 10 days in jail, minimum fees of $1250, substance abuse counseling, approved traffic survival school course, community restitution, license suspension and required Ignition Interlock Device (IID) installation. If you refuse to take a test to determine your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC), you will face an automatic one-year suspension of your license. To reinstate your driving privileges after a DUI related suspension, you will have to pay mandatory reinstatement fees and file an SR-22.

Arizona Ignition Interlock Device (IID) Requirements

Under Arizona State Law, a court can require the installation of an ignition interlock device for many drug- and alcohol-related offenses. In addition, a person may be eligible for a Special Ignition Interlock Restricted Driver License (SIIRDL) after a license suspension or revocation due to a DUI-related violation. To qualify for a SIIRDL, you must install the IID and provide proof of installation, submit an SR-22, and pay all reinstatement fees. Failure to maintain the installation of the IID for the length of your suspension will result in the automatic suspension of your driving privileges.

      FAQs About SR-22 in Arizona

An SR-22 is a certificate that proves you have the minimum required auto insurance coverage mandated by your state. It's often required for drivers who have been convicted of serious driving offenses like DUIs or driving without insurance.

The duration of SR-22 insurance requirements varies by state and the offense. Typically, it's required for a minimum of three years, but it can be longer depending on the circumstances. During this period, the insurance company will keep the state updated on your car insurance policy renewals and cancellations to ensure you maintain consistent coverage. Breathe Easy can help you understand the specific duration needed in your case.

Allowing your SR-22 policy to lapse or canceling it prematurely can result in serious consequences, including license suspension or additional fines. It's crucial to maintain continuous coverage until your SR-22 requirement is fulfilled. This can be a challenge if your long-time insurance carrier decides to end your coverage after your DUI.

When you are done selecting your insurance plan, Breathe Easy can connect you with an Intoxalock representative for further assistance. They will answer any questions you have and help you get set up with an installation appointment at a convenient time.
