Understanding SR-22 in California and Its Duration
An SR-22, or "Certificate of Financial Responsibility," is required in California for a three-year probationary period, during which drivers must maintain proof they meet minimum liability insurance requirements.
There are three ways to file the SR22:
- Car Insurance Policy
- Motorcycle Policy
- Non-Owner's Policy
The first two are intended for drivers with the vehicles registered in their name. The non-owner’s policy is intended for a driver who does not own a vehicle and wants to satisfy the DMV or a driver that drives a commercial truck or rents cars often.
California Ignition Interlock Device (IID) Requirements
An IID is a device linked to your vehicle's ignition that checks your breath alcohol concentration.
California is running a statewide IID pilot program in which drivers may avoid a mandatory suspension period by installing an IID and meeting other program requirements.
Under the program, for convicted repeat DUI offenses and ALL convicted injury-involved DUI offenses, participants are required to install an IID for 1 to 4 years depending on the number of prior DUI convictions. For a first DUI without injury, you must only obtain an IID if a court orders it, though you may choose to install an IID to obtain an IID restricted license prior to your suspension period running. You may also choose to install an IID rather than serve an administrative suspension.
Additional Fees Associated with a DUI
A DUI conviction necessitates a $125.00 registration fee to obtain a restricted license and a $15.00 fee for license reprint. Mandatory IID-restricted licenses come with a $103.00 administrative service fee. There may be additional fees such as reissue fees and restriction fees.

FAQs About SR-22 in California
An SR-22 is a certificate that proves you have the minimum required auto insurance coverage mandated by your state. It's often required for drivers who have been convicted of serious driving offenses like DUIs or driving without insurance.
The duration of SR-22 insurance requirements varies by state and the offense. Typically, it's required for a minimum of three years, but it can be longer depending on the circumstances. During this period, the insurance company will keep the state updated on your car insurance policy renewals and cancellations to ensure you maintain consistent coverage. Breathe Easy can help you understand the specific duration needed in your case.
Allowing your SR-22 policy to lapse or canceling it prematurely can result in serious consequences, including license suspension or additional fines. It's crucial to maintain continuous coverage until your SR-22 requirement is fulfilled. This can be a challenge if your long-time insurance carrier decides to end your coverage after your DUI.
When you are done selecting your insurance plan, Breathe Easy can connect you with an Intoxalock representative for further assistance. They will answer any questions you have and help you get set up with an installation appointment at a convenient time.
