      Ohio SR-22 Insurance

Reinstating Driving Privileges with an SR-22 Bond

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (Ohio BMV) requires you to carry minimum-limit liability insurance. An SR-22 Bond may be required under a number of circumstances such as when your license is suspended for Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of Drugs or Alcohol (OVI). The SR-22 Insurance Bond certifies that you have the minimum-limit liability insurance required by state law.

In Ohio, minimum-limit liability insurance coverage is:

      • $50,000 total bodily injury
      • $25,000 property damage

An SR-22 Bond in Ohio must be kept on file for three (3) years. If you terminate or cancel your policy within those three years, your driving privileges will be suspended.

How Do I File an SR-22 Bond in Ohio?

The easiest way to file an SR-22 certificate is electronically with the Ohio BMV. It usually processes with 72 hours. Terminations or cancelations of the policy are also submitted electronically. As soon as the SR-22 is filed with the BMV and the other conditions to have your driving privileges reinstated are met, you will be reissued a license. Depending on the circumstances, your license may be restricted by an ignition interlock requirement or other condition required by the court or BMV.

FAQs About DUI and SR-22 in Ohio

An SR-22 is a certificate that proves you have the minimum required auto insurance coverage mandated by your state. It's often required for drivers who have been convicted of serious driving offenses like DUIs or driving without insurance.

The duration of SR-22 insurance requirements varies by state and the offense. Typically, it's required for a minimum of three years, but it can be longer depending on the circumstances. During this period, the insurance company will keep the state updated on your car insurance policy renewals and cancellations to ensure you maintain consistent coverage. Breathe Easy can help you understand the specific duration needed in your case.
